Abstract

The smoothness of breast milk production is an important factor in the success of breastfeeding during thepostpartum period. However, in the early postpartum phase, some mothers still experience inadequate breast milk production. Based on preliminary study data at Erna Way Jepara Independent Midwifery Practice, East Lampung, in April 2025, there were 10 postpartum mothers who reported problems with insufficient breast milk production. This condition may be caused by suboptimal let-down reflexes, anxiety, fatigue, and insufficient breast stimulation, indicating the need for appropriate interventions to improve breast milk production. One non-pharmacological intervention that can be applied is lactation massage. Lactation massage is a massage technique applied to the breast and back areas aimed at stimulating the release of oxytocin and prolactin hormones, promoting maternal relaxation, and facilitating breast milk flow. This study aimed to determine the effect of lactation massage on the smoothness of breast milk production among postpartum mothers at Erna Way Jepara Independent Midwifery Practice, East Lampung, in 2025.This study employed a quantitative method with a one-group pretest–posttest design. The sample consisted of 10 postpartum mothers selected using a total sampling technique. The research instrument was an observation sheet assessing breast milk production smoothness, categorized as poor, adequate, and smooth. Data analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. The results showed an improvement in breast milk production smoothness after the implementation of lactation massage. Before the intervention, 5 postpartum mothers (50%) were categorized as having poor breast milk production and 5 mothers (50%) as adequate. After the intervention, 5 mothers (50%) were categorized as adequate and 5 mothers (50%) as smooth, with no participants remaining in the poor category. The Wilcoxon test result showed a p-value of 0.005 (p < 0.05), indicating that lactation massage had a significant effect on improving breast milk production among postpartum mothers.
