Abstract

The postpartum period (puerperium) spans the time from the delivery of the placenta until the reproductive organs return to their pre-pregnancy state, a process lasting 42 days. This period is closely linked to breastfeeding—a long-term process requiring the mother to prepare for breast care and establish a breastfeeding routine. One potential complication during this time is breast engorgement, which is the accumulation of breast milk caused by the narrowing of ducts that were not fully emptied during nursing. If left untreated, engorgement can progress to mastitis. This study aimed to examine the midwifery care provided to a postpartum mother experiencing breast engorgement. A case study design was employed, focusing on Mrs. S, who was suffering from this condition. Data collection involved observation, interviews, and a review of documentation using the SOAP format. The results showed that the engorgement was successfully resolved over three days through interventions including breast care, instruction on correct breastfeeding techniques, assistance with milk expression using a pump, and frequent breastfeeding counseling and evaluation. The study concluded that the process proceeded normally without complications, and the management of the breast engorgement aligned with established theory. It is recommended that postpartum mothers experiencing breast engorgement address the issue through routine breast care, supported by the use of a breast pump and more frequent breastfeeding
